What Is Glycemic Load?
Glycemic load (GL) estimates how much a serving of food is likely to raise blood sugar by combining glycemic index (GI) with the carbohydrate grams in that portion. Glycemic Load Formula
Glycemic load is calculated as:

GI is a 0 to 100 scale relative to pure glucose. Carbs in portion is the digestible carbohydrate grams you actually eat, not total food weight.
Interpreting Results
- Low load: GL ≤ 10
- Medium load: GL 11 to 19
- High load: GL ≥ 20
A medium-GI food can still produce a low GL if the portion is small. Conversely, a large portion of moderate-GI carbs can produce a high GL.
