What Is Glycemic Load?

Glycemic load (GL) estimates how much a serving of food is likely to raise blood sugar by combining glycemic index (GI) with the carbohydrate grams in that portion. GI alone describes carbohydrate quality; GL also reflects quantity. Use the Glycemic Index Calculator to look up GI values for common foods.

Glycemic Load Formula

Glycemic load is calculated as:

$$GL = \frac{GI \times carbs\ in\ portion\ (g)}{100}$$

GI is a 0 to 100 scale relative to pure glucose. Carbs in portion is the digestible carbohydrate grams you actually eat, not total food weight.

Interpreting Results

  • Low load: GL ≤ 10
  • Medium load: GL 11 to 19
  • High load: GL ≥ 20

A medium-GI food can still produce a low GL if the portion is small. Conversely, a large portion of moderate-GI carbs can produce a high GL.
