Body Adiposity Index Calculator

Calculate body adiposity index from hip circumference and height with age and sex classification.

What Is Body Adiposity Index?

Body adiposity index (BAI) estimates body fat percentage from hip circumference and height without using body weight. Gallagher age and sex tables classify results as underweight, healthy, overweight, or obese. Compare with the BMI Calculator for a weight-based perspective.

BAI Formula

$$BAI = \dfrac{hip_{cm}}{height_m^{1.5}} - 18$$

Measure hip circumference at the widest point of the buttocks with a level tape measure. Height should be in meters when applying the formula manually.

Interpreting Your Result

Healthy BAI ranges differ by sex and age group (20 to 39, 40 to 59, and 60 to 79 years). A higher BAI suggests greater adiposity, but BAI should be interpreted alongside overall health and clinical assessment.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is BAI different from BMI?

BMI uses weight and height squared. BAI uses hip circumference and height raised to the 1.5 power, so it does not require body weight.

What is a healthy BAI for men?

For men aged 40 to 59, a healthy BAI is typically 11% to 23%. Thresholds vary by age group and are shown in the calculator results.

Where should I measure hip circumference?

Place the tape around the hips at the level of the greatest posterior protrusion of the buttocks, viewed from the side.

Is BAI accurate for athletes?

BAI, like BMI, is a screening tool. Muscular builds and unusual fat distribution can affect interpretation, so clinical context matters.

Why does age affect BAI categories?

Gallagher classification tables adjust healthy ranges across decades because body composition shifts with aging.
