How ACT Scores Are Calculated

Each ACT section is scored from 1 to 36. Your raw score is the number of scored questions answered correctly, then converted to a scaled score using official conversion tables. The composite score is the average of English, Math, Reading, and Science, rounded to the nearest whole number.

Raw Score Limits by Section

  • English: scored out of 40
  • Math: scored out of 41
  • Reading: scored out of 27
  • Science: scored out of 34

Composite Score Formula

What is a good ACT score?

A composite score above 24 is generally considered good, while 30 or higher is excellent for competitive college admissions.

Why do raw score maximums differ from question counts?

The ACT administers more questions than it scores in each section. Use the scored raw totals from your official report, not the total questions you answered.

Yes. Each test form has slightly different equating tables. This calculator uses representative official conversion data and provides close estimates.

Is there a penalty for wrong answers?
