Work and Power Calculator
Calculate work, power, force, distance, and time using W = Fd and P = W/t.
What Is a Work and Power Calculator?
The Work and Power Calculator solves the mechanical relationships between force, distance, work, power, and time. Work measures the energy transferred when a force moves an object, and power measures how quickly that energy is used. Pick what you want to find and the tool rearranges the formulas for you.
How the Calculation Works
Work is force times distance, and power is work divided by time:
$$W = F d$$
$$P = \frac{W}{t}$$
Where:
- W is work in joules (J)
- F is force in newtons (N)
- d is distance in meters (m)
- P is power in watts (W)
- t is time in seconds (s)
Reversing the equations gives F = W/d, d = W/F, and t = W/P, which the calculator applies when you select Force, Distance, or Time.
Worked Example
Pushing with 50 N over a distance of 10 m does:
$$W = 50 \times 10 = 500 \text{ J}$$
If that work takes 5 seconds, the average power is:
$$P = \frac{500}{5} = 100 \text{ W}$$

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between work and power?
Work is the total energy transferred, measured in joules. Power is the rate of that transfer, measured in watts, where one watt equals one joule per second.
What if the force is at an angle?
This calculator assumes the force acts along the direction of motion. For an angled force, multiply by the cosine of the angle between the force and the displacement.
Can work be negative?
Yes. If the force opposes the motion, such as friction, the work done by that force is negative. The calculator uses non-negative magnitudes for straightforward values.
How do I find time from power?
Select Time in the Solve For menu, then enter the work and the power. The calculator divides work by power to return seconds.
