What Is a Tree Benefits Calculator?
Trees provide far more than shade and scenery. They absorb carbon dioxide, release oxygen, evaporate water to cool the air, and reduce heating and cooling costs for nearby buildings. This calculator estimates those environmental and economic benefits based on tree species, trunk circumference, the number of trees, and how many years you have benefited from them.
How Tree Benefits Are Calculated
Circumference is measured at 1.35 m (4.43 ft) above the ground. The tool converts circumference to diameter at breast height (DBH), then estimates biomass using species-specific allometric equations. Carbon stored equals half the biomass multiplied by the number of trees and years. From there:
- CO₂ absorbed: carbon stored × 44/12
- Oxygen produced: carbon stored × 32/12
- Water evaporated: 450 L per tree per year
- Energy savings: $23.56 per tree per year on heating and cooling
Eight species are supported: mixed, oak, Douglas fir, red maple, loblolly pine, American beech, common birch, and sugar maple. Larger circumference classes represent more mature trees with greater leaf area and higher photosynthetic output. Carbon stored is the mass of elemental carbon sequestered in the tree. CO₂ absorbed is the equivalent carbon dioxide amount, calculated by multiplying carbon by 44/12, because CO₂ molecules are heavier due to their oxygen atoms.
Why do different tree species give different results?
Each species grows at a different rate and has a unique wood density and leaf structure. The calculator uses separate allometric formulas for oak, pine, maple, birch, and other species to reflect these biological differences.
How are energy savings estimated?
Trees cool buildings in summer through shade and evapotranspiration, and block cold winds in winter. The calculator applies a fixed savings rate of $23.56 per tree per year based on reduced heating and cooling demand.
Where should I measure tree circumference?
