How the calculation works
Paper reading emissions are estimated per year as:
Paper CO₂ = (books × 7.46 kg) + (magazines × 0.95 kg) + (newspapers × 0.62 kg)
E-reader emissions are amortized over the device lifetime:
E-reader CO₂/year = device manufacturing CO₂ ÷ lifetime years
Manufacturing footprints used: Kindle/e-reader 168 kg, tablet 130 kg, smartphone 55 kg. Annual savings = paper CO₂ − e-reader CO₂ (negative if digital is worse). Trees equivalent = savings ÷ (48 lb × 0.453592 kg/lb) per year, using ~48 lb CO₂ absorbed per tree per year.
When does an e-reader pay off?
