Sound Wavelength

Wavelength is the spatial period of a sound wave: the distance between repeating pressure peaks. It links wave speed and frequency and changes with the medium.

Wavelength Formula

$$\lambda = \frac{v}{f}$$

\(\lambda\) is wavelength in meters, \(v\) is speed of sound in the medium (m/s), and \(f\) is frequency in hertz. In air near room temperature, \(v \approx 343\) m/s.

Example: 440 Hz in air gives \(\lambda = 343/440 \approx 0.780\) m, about 780 mm.

Speed in Different Media

Sound travels faster in denser, stiffer media. Water at roughly 1480 m/s and steel near 5960 m/s produce shorter wavelengths than air at the same frequency.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does medium change wavelength?

Frequency is set by the source. Speed of sound depends on the medium, so wavelength adjusts as \(\lambda = v/f\).

What is a typical audible wavelength in air?

At 1000 Hz in air, wavelength is about 0.34 m. Low bass near 50 Hz spans several meters.

How is wavelength related to period?

Period \(T = 1/f\) is time for one cycle. Wavelength is the spatial analog: one cycle in distance.

Does temperature affect air speed?

Yes. Warmer air has higher sound speed, slightly lengthening wavelength at a fixed frequency.

When is custom speed useful?

Use custom speed for specialized gases, elevated temperature corrections, or lab measurements not covered by presets.
