Semester Grade Calculator
Calculate weighted semester grades from Q1, Q2, and final exam scores, or find the final exam score needed to reach your target grade.
How Semester Grades Are Calculated
A semester grade is a weighted average of quarter grades and a final exam. Each component is multiplied by its weight percentage, then summed and divided by total weight.
Weighted Average Formula
$$G = \frac{Q_1 w_1 + Q_2 w_2 + F w_3}{w_1 + w_2 + w_3}$$Example with Q1 = 85% (25%), Q2 = 88% (25%), and Final = 90% (50%): semester grade = (85×25 + 88×25 + 90×50) / 100 = 88.25%.
Finding the Required Final Exam Score
Rearrange the formula to solve for the final: \(F = (G \times W - Q_1 w_1 - Q_2 w_2) / w_3\). If the result exceeds 100%, the target grade is not achievable with current quarter scores.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do weights need to add up to 100%?
They do not have to, but they usually do. The calculator normalizes by total weight, so 25/25/50 and 1/1/2 produce the same result.
What if I need more than 100% on the final?
That means your target semester grade is not reachable. You would need higher quarter grades or a lower target.
Can I change the quarter weights?
Yes. Enter the weights your school uses. Common splits are 25/25/50 or 30/30/40.
