Age Adjusted D Dimer Calculator

Calculate age-adjusted D-dimer cutoff levels using FEU or DDU units for patients over 50.

What Is Age-Adjusted D-Dimer?

D-dimer is a fibrin degradation product used to help rule out venous thromboembolism. In older adults, the standard cutoff of 500 ng/mL FEU has lower specificity. Age-adjusted cutoffs improve diagnostic accuracy. Related tools: 4T Score Calculator and ABI Calculator.

Age-Adjusted Cutoff Formula

$$Cutoff = Age \times Multiplier$$

Multiplier is 10 for FEU and 5 for DDU. This adjustment applies to patients aged 51 years or older.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I use age-adjusted D-dimer?

Use it for patients over 50 with suspected pulmonary embolism or deep vein thrombosis when clinical pretest probability is low to intermediate.

What is the difference between FEU and DDU?

FEU (fibrinogen equivalent units) and DDU (D-dimer units) are different reporting standards. DDU values are roughly half of FEU values for the same sample.

What cutoff applies below age 51?

Standard fixed cutoffs (typically 500 ng/mL FEU) are used for patients under 51 rather than the age-adjusted formula.

Does a normal D-dimer rule out PE?

A value at or below the cutoff makes PE unlikely in appropriately selected patients, but clinical judgment remains essential.

What if my measured value is above the cutoff?

An elevated D-dimer is not specific for thrombosis. Further imaging such as CT pulmonary angiography may be indicated based on clinical context.
