Roulette Payouts and Odds

Roulette payouts depend on how many numbers your bet covers. A bet covering $S$ spaces on a 36-number layout pays:

$$\text{payout ratio} = \frac{36}{S} - 1$$

Win probability is $S$ divided by the number of pockets (37 on European wheels, 38 on American wheels). Related tools: Probability Calculator and Expected Value Calculator.

Expected Return

Expected return per dollar is $\text{win probability} \times \text{payout} - \text{lose probability}$. On a fair wheel this is negative because of the zero pockets. American roulette has an extra 00, so house edge is higher than on European tables.

Common Bet Types

Outside bets such as red, black, even, odd, and high/low cover 18 numbers and pay 1:1. Dozens and columns cover 12 numbers and pay 2:1. Inside bets cover fewer numbers with larger payouts, such as 35:1 on a straight single-number bet.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between European and American roulette?

European wheels have 37 pockets (0 through 36). American wheels add 00 for 38 pockets, which lowers win probability on most bets and increases the house edge.

Does payout include my original bet?

The payout ratio shown is profit on top of your stake. If you win, you also get your original bet back.

Why is expected return negative?

Zero and double-zero pockets give the house an advantage. Over many bets, players lose a small fraction of each wager on average.

What are the odds on a straight bet?

On European roulette, one winning number out of 37 gives about 2.70% win probability with a 35:1 payout. On American roulette, it is 1 out of 38, about 2.63%.
