How Much Will Your Hair Grow?

Our hair growth calculator helps you estimate how long your hair will grow over a given period. Based on the average hair growth rate of 0.5 inches per month, you can plan your hair growth journey whether you are growing out a haircut, preparing for a special occasion, or simply curious about your hair's potential length.

Hair grows in cycles with three phases: anagen (the active growth phase lasting 2-6 years), catagen (a transitional phase of about 2 weeks), and telogen (a resting phase of about 100 days). At any given time, different hairs on your scalp are in different phases, which is why you always have some hair shedding and some growing.

Several factors influence how fast your hair grows including genetics, sex, age, nutrition, and stress levels. The calculator uses the average rate, so your results may vary based on these individual factors.

How to Use the Calculator

Choose from three calculation modes:

  • Growth from time — Enter a time period to see how much your hair will grow in that duration.
  • Time for desired length — Enter how much length you want to gain, and we will tell you how long it will take.
  • Final length — Enter your current hair length and a time period to see your final length.

You can switch between inches, centimeters, and millimeters for length, and between months, years, and days for time.

The Formula

The average hair growth rate is 0.5 inches per month. The formula is simple:

L = 0.5 × t

Where L is the length gained in inches, and t is the time in months. For metric units, the equivalent rate is 1.27 cm or 12.7 mm per month.

Frequently Asked Questions

How fast does hair grow on average?

The average hair growth rate is about 0.5 inches (1.27 cm) per month, which translates to approximately 6 inches (15 cm) per year. This rate can vary based on genetics, age, health, and other factors.

Can I make my hair grow faster?

While you cannot change your genetic growth rate, maintaining a healthy diet rich in protein, biotin, and vitamins, reducing stress, getting regular trims to prevent split ends, and avoiding excessive heat styling can help your hair reach its maximum growth potential.

How long will it take to grow my hair 6 inches?

At the average growth rate of 0.5 inches per month, growing 6 inches of hair will take approximately 12 months (1 year). Individual results may vary depending on your personal growth rate and hair care routine.

Does hair grow faster in summer?

Some studies suggest hair may grow slightly faster in summer due to increased blood circulation and metabolic rate. However, the difference is minimal, and the average annual growth rate remains around 6 inches regardless of season.

How much hair does the average person lose per day?

It is normal to lose 50 to 100 hairs per day as part of the natural hair growth cycle. This shedding occurs because hairs in the telogen (resting) phase fall out to make room for new growth.
