What is a Random Item Selector?

A random item selector is a tool that picks one or more random entries from a list of items. It is useful for making unbiased decisions, picking lottery winners, selecting contest entries, or simply choosing something when you can't make up your mind. This tool allows you to paste your list, configure how items are separated, and instantly pick random items with or without the possibility of repeats.

How to Use This Tool

  1. Enter your list items in the input text area, separated by your chosen delimiter (default is comma).
  2. Adjust the Item Separator if your items use a different delimiter (e.g., newline, semicolon).
  3. Set how many items you want to pick using the Number of Items to Pick field.
  4. Toggle Allow Duplicates if you want the same item to be selectable more than once.
  5. Click the Pick Random Items button to get your selection.
  6. The selected items appear in the output area on the right, where you can copy or download them.

What Can You Use This For?

  • Giveaways & Contests: Pick a random winner from a list of participants.
  • Decision Making: Let chance decide when you're stuck between options.
  • Sampling: Select a random subset from a larger dataset for testing.
  • Games: Choose random items, characters, or power-ups for your game sessions.
  • Education: Pick random questions from a study list for practice.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I pick more items than are in the list?

Yes, but only if Allow Duplicates is enabled. When duplicates are allowed, the same item can be picked multiple times, so you can pick any number of items regardless of how many are in the list. Without duplicates, you can only pick up to the total number of unique items in your input.

What separators can I use?

You can use any text as a separator. Common choices are a comma (, ), a newline (\n), a semicolon (;), or a pipe (|). Make sure your separator matches how your items are delimited in the input.

Is each pick truly random?

Yes. The tool uses JavaScript's Math.random() function to make each selection uniformly random. Every item has an equal chance of being picked on each draw.
