What the Gold Price Calculator Does

The Gold Price Calculator turns a weight and a karat into a dollar value. Enter the weight of your gold, choose the unit it was measured in, pick the karat, and type the current price per gram of 24K gold. The calculator converts the weight to grams, applies the purity of the selected karat, and shows the total value, the pure gold content in both grams and troy ounces, and the price per gram for every common karat.

The math is simple but easy to get wrong, especially when weight arrives in tola or troy ounces and the quoted price is per gram of pure gold. This tool handles the unit conversion and the purity adjustment for you, and everything is computed in the browser, so no data is uploaded anywhere.

How to Use the Calculator

  1. Enter the gold weight and select the unit: grams, troy ounces, tola, or kilograms.
  2. Choose the karat of the item, from 24K down to 10K.
  3. Enter the current price per gram of 24K gold in dollars.
  4. Read the total value, pure gold content, and the full karat comparison table.

Karat Purity and What It Means

Karat measures how much of a gold alloy is actual gold. Pure gold is 24 karats, and each karat is one part in twenty four. The purity percentage is the karat number divided by 24:

  • 24K: 99.9% gold, the purest form sold, too soft for daily jewelry.
  • 22K: 91.7% gold, common in coins and traditional jewelry.
  • 21K: 87.5% gold, used in some regional jewelry styles.
  • 18K: 75.0% gold, a popular balance of durability and color.
  • 14K: 58.3% gold, the most common alloy in US jewelry.
  • 10K: 41.7% gold, the minimum that can legally be called gold in the US.

The remaining percentage is made up of metals such as copper, silver, zinc, or palladium. Those metals strengthen the piece and change its color, which is how white gold and rose gold are created.

How the Value Is Calculated

The calculator follows the same steps a jeweler or refiner uses. First the weight is converted to grams: one troy ounce is 31.1034768 grams and one tola is 11.6638038 grams. Next the price per gram of 24K gold is multiplied by the purity of your karat to get an effective price per gram. For example, 18K gold is 0.75 pure, so if 24K costs $75 per gram, the 18K price is $56.25 per gram. Finally that price is multiplied by the weight in grams to produce the total value. The pure gold content is the weight multiplied by the purity, shown so you can compare a 10 gram 14K ring with a 6 gram 22K chain.

Scrap Value Versus Retail Price

The total on this page is the intrinsic metal value, often called the melt value or scrap value. A retail price in a store includes manufacturing, design, import duties, and markup, so it will be higher. In the reverse direction, a buyer of scrap gold typically pays a percentage of melt value, often between 70% and 90%, to cover refining costs and their margin. Use the calculator as a fair benchmark before you negotiate either a sale or a purchase.

Where to Find the Price per Gram

Gold trades in US dollars per troy ounce on international markets, and financial sites quote that spot price continuously. Divide the spot price per troy ounce by 31.1034768 to get the price per gram, then enter it above. Prices change during the trading day, so re-check the quote before making a decision. Local prices can differ because of dealer premiums, import taxes, and currency conversion.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which unit should I use for a gold chain bought in the Middle East?

Jewelry in many Middle Eastern and South Asian markets is sold by tola. Select the tola option and the calculator converts 1 tola (11.6638038 grams) to grams automatically. If the receipt states grams, enter the value in grams instead.

Is 24K gold always 100% pure?

No. Even investment grade gold is typically 99.9% or 99.99% pure, and the calculator uses 99.9% for 24K. Truly pure 100% gold is not practical for everyday items because it is extremely soft.

Why is the store price higher than the value shown here?

The calculator shows intrinsic metal value. Retail prices add design, manufacturing, certification, shipping, duties, and store margin, which can double the price of a finished piece compared with its melt value.

Does the calculation include stones or clasps?

No. Gemstones, beads, and non gold clasps should be excluded from the weight before you enter it. Use the weight of the gold parts only, because stones have their own value and are not priced with the gold content.

How do I convert the spot price per ounce to a price per gram?

Divide the price per troy ounce by 31.1034768. For example, $2,400 per troy ounce equals about $77.16 per gram. Enter the per gram amount in the price field to get accurate results.

Is my data sent anywhere when I use the calculator?

No. All conversions and calculations run in your browser with JavaScript. Nothing is uploaded, stored, or shared, and the tool keeps working offline after the page loads.
