Understanding Percentage Return on Investments

Percentage return measures the financial gain or loss produced by an asset relative to the original capital invested. Expressing investment performance as a percentage allows investors to compare profits across different portfolio sizes and asset classes.

How to Calculate Total Return and Annualized CAGR

To find the total percentage return:

$$\text{Total Return (\%)} = \left(\frac{(\text{Final Value} + \text{Dividends}) - \text{Initial Investment}}{\text{Initial Investment}}\right) \times 100$$

When evaluating multi-year investments, computing the Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) provides the geometric annual rate of return:

$$\text{CAGR (\%)} = \left(\left(\frac{\text{Ending Total Value}}{\text{Initial Investment}}\right)^{\frac{1}{\text{Years}}} - 1\right) \times 100$$

Example Return Calculation

Suppose you purchase stocks for $1,000 and sell them 3 years later for $1,500 with zero dividends:

  • Net Profit: $1,500 - $1,000 = $500
  • Total Return: ($500 / $1,000) × 100 = 50.00%
  • Annualized Return (CAGR): ((1,500 / 1,000)(1/3) - 1) × 100 = 14.47% per year

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between total return and annual return?

Total return reflects the entire percentage gain over the full holding period regardless of duration. Annual return (CAGR) normalizes that gain to a per-year compounding rate.

How do dividends affect percentage return?

Dividends and interest payments add directly to total realized ending value, increasing both net profit and overall percentage return.

Can percentage return be negative?

Yes. If the final value plus income is less than the initial capital, the result represents a percentage loss (a negative percentage return).
