Finding the Silver Lining in Staying Home

The concept of a "silver lining" refers to finding the positive side of a challenging situation. During periods of quarantine, remote work, or staying at home, there are significant, measurable benefits to your personal finances, daily schedule, and carbon footprint.

By eliminating daily commutes and reducing impulse spending, you reclaim both time and money. This calculator is designed to quantify those benefits, showing you exactly how much you save when you work from home or stay inside.

How the Savings are Calculated

The calculator estimates your savings across three major areas:

  • Financial Savings: Combines your commuting costs (gasoline, EV charging, or transit fares) and your lifestyle spending (takeout lunches, coffee shop runs, weekend entertainment, gym memberships, and retail shopping) over the specified duration.
  • Time Reclaimed: Multiplies your daily round-trip commute duration by the total number of days spent staying home. This is time you no longer spend stuck in traffic or waiting for public transit.
  • CO2 Emissions Prevented: Based on your commute method, the calculator estimates the weight of carbon dioxide emissions kept out of the atmosphere. Gasoline cars emit the most carbon (about 0.89 lbs per mile), followed by EVs (0.24 lbs from the grid) and public transit (0.15 lbs).

Reinvesting Your Reclaimed Resources

Reclaiming hours of commute time can give you more time for exercise, reading, or family. Additionally, the money saved by eating at home and brewing your own coffee can be put toward emergency savings or other long-term financial goals.
