How conversions work
Power is the rate at which energy is transferred. One watt equals one joule per second:
\[ 1\,\text{W} = 1\,\frac{\text{J}}{\text{s}} \]
To convert from a unit \(U_1\) with watt factor \(f_1\) to \(U_2\) with watt factor \(f_2\):
\[ \text{value}_{U_2} = \text{value}_{U_1} \times \frac{f_1}{f_2} \]

Frequently Asked Questions
Which horsepower variant should I use?
Mechanical horsepower (hp) is most common in automotive specs in the US. Metric horsepower (PS) is standard in Europe and Asia for engines. Electrical horsepower (746 W) is used for electric motor nameplates, and boiler horsepower (9809.5 W) is used in steam systems.
Is the conversion exact?
Yes. Each unit has a fixed factor relative to the watt and the calculation runs in IEEE 754 double precision with results rendered to 12 significant digits.
What is the difference between BTU/h and W?
BTU per hour is a rate of heat transfer used heavily in HVAC. One BTU/h equals approximately 0.293 W. Air conditioner capacities expressed in BTU/h can be converted to electrical equivalents using this factor.
