How to Use the RPM Calculator

Fill in any three of the four fields (Engine RPM, Transmission Ratio, Tire Diameter, Vehicle Speed). The fourth field will be calculated automatically. For example, if you know your engine is running at 3,500 RPM, you are in 3rd gear with a 3.99 ratio, and your tires are 23 inches in diameter, enter these three values to find your vehicle speed.

The tool also displays the derived Wheel RPM, which is the engine RPM divided by the transmission ratio.

The Formula

The relationship between the four variables is:

Speed = RPM × Tire Diameter × π × 60 / (Transmission Ratio × 63360)

Where speed is in miles per hour, tire diameter is in inches, and 63360 converts inches to miles (12 inches per foot × 5280 feet per mile).
