Asphalt Calculator
Calculate asphalt volume, weight, and total cost from area dimensions, thickness, and density for driveways, roads, and paving projects.
Asphalt Calculator for Driveways and Paving Projects
The Asphalt Calculator estimates how much hot-mix asphalt you need for a driveway, parking lot, or road patch. Enter length and width (or total area), pavement thickness, and asphalt density to get volume, weight, and optional material cost. Results update instantly as you change inputs.
How asphalt quantity is calculated
Asphalt volume equals paved area times thickness:
$$\text{Volume} = \text{Area} \times \text{Thickness}$$
Weight follows from density. Typical asphalt concrete ranges from 2,200 to 2,500 kg/m³ (about 138 to 156 lb/ft³):
$$\text{Weight} = \text{Volume} \times \rho$$
For budgeting, multiply weight in tonnes by your supplier price per tonne. Add a small waste allowance (5% to 10%) for compaction loss and trimming.
Example: residential driveway
A 7 m by 6 m driveway paved 5 cm thick at 2,300 kg/m³ needs about 4.83 tonnes of asphalt. At $120 per tonne, material cost is roughly $580 before delivery fees.

Frequently Asked Questions
What density should I use for asphalt?
Most hot-mix asphalt falls between 2,200 and 2,500 kg/m³. Dense mixes near 2,400 kg/m³ are common for conservative estimates. Ask your supplier for the exact mix density.
How thick should a driveway asphalt layer be?
Residential driveways often use 5 to 8 cm (2 to 3 inches) of asphalt over a compacted base. Heavier traffic or soft soil may need thicker sections.
How much does asphalt cost per tonne?
Prices vary by region and oil market, often from $80 to $200 per tonne. Use the cost field in this calculator with a quote from your local supplier.
Should I add extra material for waste?
Yes. A 5% to 10% allowance covers spillage, edge trimming, and minor grade changes. The calculator includes an adjustable waste percentage.
