IVF Pregnancy Dating

After in vitro fertilization, due dates are calculated from the embryo transfer date rather than the last menstrual period. Different embryo stages add a fixed number of days to reach a 40-week equivalent due date. This calculator estimates due date and current gestational age from transfer type. For related fertility timing, see the Implantation Calculator.

Days Added by Transfer Type

Day 5 blastocyst transfer: add 261 days. Day 3 cleavage embryo: add 263 days. Fresh or donor egg cycles treated as conception equivalent: add 266 days. These offsets account for embryonic age at transfer plus standard gestational length.

Gestational Age Today

Weeks and days pregnant are computed from transfer date to today, plus an adjustment for embryo stage (19 days for day 5, 17 for day 3, 14 for own or donor eggs). Actual delivery often occurs between 37 and 42 weeks, so treat the due date as an estimate.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is IVF due date different from natural conception?

IVF dating starts from embryo transfer and embryo age at transfer, not from LMP, which removes uncertainty about ovulation timing.

Why does day 5 transfer add 261 days?

A day 5 embryo is five days post-fertilization. Adding 261 days to transfer date aligns with roughly 266 days from fertilization to term.

When can I take a pregnancy test after IVF?

Clinic protocols vary, but home tests are often reliable about 9 to 10 days after day 5 transfer. Follow your fertility team instructions for beta hCG blood testing.

Does twin or multiple transfer change the due date?

Due date calculation is the same for singleton and multiple pregnancies, though multiples often deliver earlier in practice.

How accurate is the IVF due date?

IVF dating is more precise than LMP dating, but only about 5% of babies arrive exactly on the due date. Most deliver within two weeks before or after.
