What Is a Gut Microbiome Score?

A gut microbiome score summarizes how well your daily diet and lifestyle habits support beneficial gut bacteria. This calculator uses 11 questions covering fiber, fats, produce, sugar, processed and fermented foods, plus NSAID use, alcohol, hydration, and physical activity. Each answer earns 0 to 2 points; the raw total (0–22) is scaled to a 0–100% score. Compare with the Diet Risk Score Calculator for broader dietary risk assessment.

How the Score Is Calculated

Raw score equals the sum of all 11 question points (maximum 22). The percentage score is (raw ÷ 22) × 100. Scores of 65% or higher suggest gut-friendly habits. Scores from 33% to 64% indicate moderate room for improvement. Scores below 33% suggest several habits that may stress the gut microbiome.

Tips to Improve Gut Health

Prioritize fiber from whole grains, legumes, fruits, and vegetables. Favor unsaturated fats over saturated fats. Limit added sugar and ultra-processed foods. Include fermented foods such as yogurt or sauerkraut. Stay hydrated, exercise regularly, minimize NSAID use when possible, and limit alcohol.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good gut microbiome score?

A score of 65% or higher is considered good. Scores from 33% to 64% are moderate, and below 33% suggests habits that may need attention.

How many questions are in the calculator?

There are 11 questions: seven about diet and four about lifestyle. Each question contributes 0, 1, or 2 points.

Does this replace medical testing?

No. This is a lifestyle screening tool based on self-reported habits. It cannot diagnose dysbiosis or replace stool testing or clinical evaluation.

Why do fermented foods score higher?

Fermented foods provide live cultures and metabolites that may support beneficial gut bacteria. Regular intake earns the maximum 2 points in that category.

How are diet and lifestyle subscores shown?

Diet subscore sums the first seven questions (max 14 points). Lifestyle subscore sums the last four questions (max 8 points).
