ERG Calculator (Rowing Split & Watts)

This ERG Calculator converts between Concept2 rowing metrics: 500m split time, watts, distance, and total time. Enter any two values and the calculator solves for the remaining two using the official Concept2 power formula.

The Concept2 Power Formula

Watts = 2.8 / (split seconds / 500)³. A 2:00/500m split (120 seconds) produces about 203 watts. Total time relates to distance and pace: time = distance × split / 500.

Using the Calculator

Leave unknown fields at zero. For example, enter a 2:00 split and 2000 m distance to find watts (~203 W) and total time (8:00). Or enter watts and total time to back-calculate split and distance covered.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I convert rowing split to watts?

Use Watts = 2.8 / (pace in seconds per 500m / 500)³. A 1:45/500m split (105 s) equals about 278 watts on a Concept2 ergometer.

What is a good 500m split for rowing?

Recreational rowers often sit between 2:00 and 2:30/500m. Competitive athletes target sub-1:45; elite rowers may hold splits under 1:30 for sustained pieces.

How is total rowing time calculated from distance and split?

Total time (seconds) = distance (meters) × split (seconds per 500m) / 500. Rowing 2000 m at a 2:00 split takes 480 seconds (8 minutes).

Why does Concept2 use the 2.8 constant?

Concept2 derived the 2.8 factor from ergometer physics so displayed watts match real rowing power output. It is the industry standard for indoor rowing machine conversions.

Can I solve for split if I only know watts and distance?

Yes. Enter watts and distance (leave split and total time at zero). The calculator derives split from watts, then computes total time from distance and pace.
