Encounter Calculator 5e
Calculate D&D 5e encounter difficulty from party levels and monster XP with size multipliers and threshold breakdown.
What Is a D&D 5e Encounter Calculator?
This tool estimates combat difficulty for Dungeons and Dragons 5th Edition using official XP thresholds and encounter size multipliers from the Dungeon Master's Guide.
How Encounter Difficulty Works
First, sum each party member's XP threshold for Easy, Medium, Hard, and Deadly. Next, total monster XP and apply the encounter size multiplier based on monster count. The highest threshold below the adjusted XP value is the encounter difficulty.
Encounter Size Multipliers
- 1 monster: x1
- 2 monsters: x1.5
- 3 to 6 monsters: x2
- 7 to 10 monsters: x2.5
- 11 to 14 monsters: x3
- 15 or more monsters: x4

No. Players receive raw monster XP. The multiplier is only for difficulty rating.
How many encounters should a party face per day?
The DMG suggests six to eight medium or hard encounters, but many tables run three to four for pacing.
