Latent Heat and Phase Changes

When a substance changes phase (solid to liquid or liquid to gas), energy is absorbed or released without a temperature change. This hidden energy is called latent heat.

Formula

$$Q = m \cdot L$$

\(Q\) is the heat energy, \(m\) is mass, and \(L\) is specific latent heat in kJ/kg.

Water Presets

Water fusion (melting at 0 °C): \(L_f \approx 334\) kJ/kg. Water vaporization (boiling at 100 °C): \(L_v \approx 2260\) kJ/kg.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is vaporization heat larger than fusion heat?

Vaporization requires breaking all intermolecular bonds to form a gas, while melting only partially disrupts the solid structure.

Does temperature change during a phase transition?

At constant pressure, temperature stays constant while the phase change occurs; energy goes into latent heat instead.
