Aperture Area Calculator
Calculate camera lens aperture area and diameter from f-number and focal length for photography exposure planning.
What Is Lens Aperture Area?
The aperture is the opening that admits light into a camera lens. Its physical diameter and area control how much light reaches the sensor and influence depth of field. For a given focal length, a lower f-number means a wider aperture and a larger area.
Aperture Diameter and Area
$$d = \frac{f}{N}$$ $$A = \pi \left(\frac{d}{2}\right)^2$$\(f\) is focal length, \(N\) is the f-number, \(d\) is aperture diameter, and \(A\) is aperture area. For a \(50\,\text{mm}\) lens at f/2.8:
$$d = \frac{50}{2.8} \approx 17.86\,\text{mm}, \quad A \approx \pi \times (8.93)^2 \approx 250\,\text{mm}^2$$Why Area Matters for Exposure
Doubling the aperture diameter quadruples the area and admits four times as much light. Exposure settings depend on aperture area together with shutter speed and ISO. Knowing the physical opening helps compare lenses and estimate light-gathering power.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find aperture diameter from f-number?
Divide focal length by the f-number: \(d = f/N\). A 100 mm f/4 lens has a 25 mm diameter opening.
Does aperture area change when I zoom?
On many variable-aperture zoom lenses, the physical opening stays fixed while focal length changes, so the effective f-number increases at longer focal lengths.
Why is area proportional to the square of diameter?
The aperture is circular, so area follows \(A = \pi r^2\). Doubling diameter doubles radius and multiplies area by four.
Is f-number the same as aperture area?
No. f-number is a ratio of focal length to diameter. Area also depends on the actual diameter squared.
What units should I use?
Use focal length and diameter in the same length unit, typically millimeters. Area is then in mm².
