On-Base Percentage (OBP)

On-base percentage measures how often a batter reaches base per plate appearance. It is considered one of the most important offensive statistics in baseball because reaching base creates scoring opportunities.

OBP Formula

OBP = (H + BB + HBP) / (AB + BB + HBP + SF), where H is hits, BB is walks, HBP is hit by pitch, AB is at bats, and SF is sacrifice flies. Sacrifice bunts are excluded from the denominator.

Interpreting OBP

A .300 OBP is roughly league average. Elite hitters typically post .400 or higher. OBP is always expressed as a decimal (e.g., .350) rather than a percentage.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good on-base percentage?

.350 or above is very good, .400 is elite. League average is typically around .310–.320.

How is OBP different from batting average?

Batting average only counts hits divided by at bats. OBP also credits walks and hit-by-pitch, giving a fuller picture of a batter's ability to reach base.

Are sacrifice flies included?

Yes. Sacrifice flies count in the denominator (plate appearances) but not in the numerator, since the batter did not reach base.
