Cube Density Calculator
Calculate density of a cube from side length and mass
What Is Cube Density?
Density measures how much mass fits in a given volume. For a uniform cube, density is mass divided by the cube of the side length. This is a fundamental property in materials science, geology, and quality control.
Cube Density Formula
$$\rho = \frac{m}{a^3}$$\(\rho\) is density (kg/m³), \(m\) is mass, and \(a\) is the side length. This calculator accepts side length in centimeters and mass in grams, then converts to SI units for the result in kg/m³.
Example: a 10 cm cube with mass 1000 g has volume \(0.1^3 = 0.001\) m³ and density \(\rho = 1 / 0.001 = 1000\) kg/m³ (same as water).
Common Densities
Water is about 1000 kg/m³, aluminum about 2700 kg/m³, and steel about 7850 kg/m³. Comparing measured cube density to known values helps identify materials or detect voids and impurities.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is the output in kg/m³?
kg/m³ is the SI unit for density. Inputs use cm and g for convenience; the calculator converts internally before computing ρ.
Does the cube need to be perfectly uniform?
The formula assumes uniform density throughout. Hollow or composite cubes give an average bulk density, not the density of a single material.
How do I convert cm and g to SI?
1 cm = 0.01 m, so volume in m³ is \((a_{\text{cm}} / 100)^3\). 1 g = 0.001 kg. The calculator handles both conversions automatically.
Can I use this for irregular shapes?
This tool is for cubes only. For other shapes, measure volume separately (e.g., water displacement) and use ρ = m/V.
What if my side length is in millimeters?
Convert to centimeters first (10 mm = 1 cm) or divide mm by 10 before entering. The calculator expects centimeters for side length.
