What Is Fresh Frozen Plasma Used For?

Fresh frozen plasma (FFP) replaces clotting factors in coagulopathy, massive transfusion, liver disease, and selected bleeding scenarios. Dosing is weight-based because factor replacement depends on plasma volume relative to patient size.

How FFP Dose Is Calculated

Total volume equals patient weight in kilograms multiplied by the chosen dose in mL/kg. Typical therapeutic ranges are 10 to 20 mL/kg. Choosing a Dose per Kilogram

A dose of 10 mL/kg is often considered a minimum replacement volume. 12 mL/kg is a common clinical target. 15 mL/kg is a standard therapeutic dose for many protocols. 20 mL/kg represents a maximum range in some guidelines. Local blood bank policy and coagulation studies should guide the final order.
