CSS Button Generator
Design CSS buttons visually with custom colors, hover and active states, padding, borders, radius, and shadows, then copy the generated HTML and CSS instantly.
What the CSS Button Generator Does
The CSS Button Generator builds a complete button style visually and writes the HTML and CSS for you. Set the label, colors, font size and weight, padding, corner radius, border, and shadow options, and watch a real button render live with working hover and active states. When the design looks right, copy the generated code straight into your project.
Everything runs in your browser, and the preview is rendered with the exact CSS you copy, so what you see is what your page gets. No account, no upload, no build step.
How to Use the CSS Button Generator
- Type the button label, then set the font size, weight, and corner radius.
- Pick the background and text colors, plus separate hover and active background colors.
- Fine tune the padding, border style, width, and color.
- Toggle the drop shadow and lift on hover effects.
- Hover and click the preview button to test the states, then copy the HTML and CSS panels.
Button States Explained
A button is not one style but three: the resting state, the hover state while the pointer is over it, and the active state while it is pressed. The generated CSS defines all three with pseudo classes. Hover usually darkens or lightens the background and may raise the button with a shadow. Active snaps it back down to feel pressed. Keeping the three states related, often by stepping through shades of the same color, is what makes a button feel polished.
- :hover styles apply while the cursor is over the button.
- :active styles apply while the button is being pressed.
- transition smoothly animates color, shadow, and transform changes instead of snapping between states.
Padding, Radius, and Borders
Padding controls how large the button feels. Vertical padding sets the height and horizontal padding sets the breathing room around the label. Corner radius drives the personality: small radii read as serious and boxy, medium radii look modern, and a radius equal to half the button height produces a fully rounded pill. Borders add definition, which matters on light backgrounds where a white button would otherwise disappear.
Shadows and Hover Lift
A subtle drop shadow separates the button from the page and suggests it can be clicked. The hover lift effect raises the button slightly with a transform and deepens the shadow, which gives a tactile feel without any JavaScript. If you prefer flat design, turn both effects off and rely on color changes alone.
Accessibility Notes
- Check text contrast against the background with the Color Contrast Checker and aim for at least a 4.5 to 1 ratio for normal text.
- Add a visible focus style in your own stylesheet, for example a :focus-visible outline, since keyboard users need to see where focus is.
- Prefer real button elements for clickable actions so keyboard and screen reader behavior works out of the box.
- Do not rely on color alone to communicate state. The hover lift and shadow in this generator give a second cue.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the generated CSS ready to paste into my project?
Yes. The CSS uses a single .my-button class and standard properties supported by every modern browser. Rename the class if you like, then paste the CSS into your stylesheet and the HTML where the button belongs.
How do the hover and active previews work?
The preview injects the generated CSS into the page and renders a real button with the my-button class, so the hover and active pseudo classes work exactly as they will in your project. Hover your pointer and hold a click to test both states.
Why does my button look different after pasting?
Frameworks and resets often set their own button styles, including borders, background, and font inheritance. Make sure the my-button rules come after the reset, or raise specificity by scoping the class to your component.
Can I create a pill shaped button?
Yes. Set the corner radius to half of the button height or higher. For example, a button with 12px vertical padding and 16px font size is about 44px tall, so a radius of 22px or more produces a full pill.
Should I keep the transition property?
Yes. The transition makes hover and active changes animate smoothly over 0.2 seconds instead of jumping instantly. It is inexpensive and it is one of the small details that separates a polished interface from a basic one.
Does the button work on touch devices?
Yes. The active state also triggers on tap, so mobile users see pressed feedback. The transform based lift is subtle and does not interfere with scrolling or tapping.
Can I use the generator for links styled as buttons?
Yes. Replace the button element in the HTML panel with an anchor tag and keep the same class. For navigation that looks like a button, an anchor with the class is the correct semantic choice.
