What Is Total Blood Volume?

Total blood volume (TBV) is the amount of blood circulating in the body, typically about 5–6 liters in adults. It is used in anesthesia, critical care, transfusion planning, and sports medicine. Related tools: Adjusted Body Weight Calculator and A Body Shape Index Calculator.

Nadler Formula

The Nadler formula estimates blood volume from height, weight, and sex. For men: BV = 0.3669 × h³ + 0.03219 × w + 0.6041. For women: BV = 0.3561 × h³ + 0.03308 × w + 0.1833, where h is height in meters and w is weight in kg. Results are in liters.

Lemmens Formula

The Lemmens-Bernstein-Brodsky formula adjusts for body composition: BV = weight × 70 / √(BMI / 22), where BMI = weight / height². This formula accounts for adiposity and is useful when BMI deviates from normal.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a normal blood volume?

Average adult blood volume is about 70–80 mL/kg body weight, or roughly 5–6 liters. Men typically have higher blood volume than women of the same size.

Which formula is more accurate?

Nadler is widely used and sex-specific. Lemmens adjusts for BMI and may be more accurate in obese or very lean patients. Showing both provides a useful range.

What does mL/kg mean for blood volume?

Blood volume indexed to body weight (mL/kg) normalizes total volume for size. Values around 70–80 mL/kg are typical in healthy adults.

Why does sex affect the Nadler formula?

Men generally have higher blood volume per kg due to greater muscle mass and hemoglobin levels. The Nadler formula uses different coefficients for male and female patients.

Is this calculator for clinical transfusion decisions?

No. This provides estimates for educational purposes. Clinical transfusion and fluid management require laboratory values and physician judgment.
