Who Can Receive Your Blood or Plasma?

Blood transfusion compatibility depends on ABO and Rh antigens on red cells. Plasma compatibility follows inverse ABO rules because plasma carries antibodies rather than antigens. This calculator shows which recipient types can receive your donation. Related tools: Blood Type Calculator and Allowable Blood Loss Calculator.

Blood vs Plasma Compatibility

For red cell transfusion, type O- is the universal donor and AB+ is the universal recipient. For plasma, type AB is the universal donor and type O is the universal recipient because plasma antibodies determine compatibility.

Rh Factor Rules

Rh-negative donors can give to Rh-negative recipients. Rh-positive donors can give to both Rh-positive and Rh-negative recipients for plasma. For red cells, Rh-negative recipients should receive Rh-negative blood.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is the universal blood donor?

Type O- red cells can be given to all ABO and Rh types. Type O+ can donate red cells to all Rh-positive recipients.

Who is the universal plasma donor?

Type AB plasma can be given to all ABO types because AB plasma lacks anti-A and anti-B antibodies.

Why is plasma compatibility inverted?

Plasma carries antibodies. Type O plasma has anti-A and anti-B, so only type O recipients can safely receive it.

Can Rh-positive blood go to Rh-negative patients?

For red cells, Rh-negative patients should receive Rh-negative blood. Plasma rules differ and are less restrictive for Rh-positive donors.

Does this replace blood bank matching?

No. This is an educational reference. Actual transfusion requires full serologic testing and clinical protocols.
