Fractional Odds Calculator
Convert chances for and against success into fractional odds, win/lose probabilities, and streak probabilities.
What Are Fractional Odds?
Fractional odds express the ratio of chances against success to chances for success. UK and European betting markets commonly use this format. For example, 5/1 means five chances to lose for every one chance to win. See also the Decimal Odds Calculator and Odds Probability Calculator.
Fractional Odds Formula
$$\text{odds} = \frac{C_{\text{against}}}{C_{\text{for}}}$$
where $C_{\text{for}}$ is the number of chances for success and $C_{\text{against}}$ is the number of chances against success.
Converting Fractional to Decimal Odds
Decimal odds equal $(C_{\text{for}} + C_{\text{against}}) / C_{\text{for}}$. To convert fractional odds $a/b$ to decimal, compute $a/b + 1$. For example, 5/1 fractional odds equal 6.0 decimal odds.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are the odds of winning a coin toss?
A fair coin has one chance to win and one to lose, so fractional odds are 1/1 (even money). The probability of winning is 50%.
How do I convert fractional odds to decimal odds?
Add the denominator to the numerator, then divide by the denominator. For 1/2: (1+2)/2 = 1.5 decimal odds. Or simply add 1 to the decimal equivalent of the fraction.
What do 5/1 odds mean?
5/1 means five chances against for every one chance for. You win roughly 1 in 6 attempts (about 16.67% probability). A successful $1 bet at 5/1 returns $6 total ($5 profit plus $1 stake).
How is probability related to fractional odds?
Probability of winning equals $C_{\text{for}} / (C_{\text{for}} + C_{\text{against}})$. Fractional odds show the lose-to-win ratio, while probability shows the win share of all outcomes.
