What Is Arterial Age?
Arterial age translates a coronary artery calcium (CAC) Agatston score into years, making atherosclerotic burden easier to understand. It is derived from the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA) and compares estimated vascular age to chronological age. Arterial Age Formula
$$AA = 39.1 + 7.25 \times \ln(CAC + 1)$$
Where AA is arterial age in years and CAC is the Agatston calcium score from cardiac CT. Adding 1 before the logarithm allows a CAC of zero to be included in the calculation.
Understanding the Age Difference
The age difference (arterial age minus chronological age) shows whether arteries appear older or younger than expected. A positive difference suggests accelerated coronary atherosclerosis; a negative difference suggests lower-than-expected calcium burden for that age.

Should I use carotid intima-media thickness instead?
CIMT and CAC measure different aspects of vascular disease. This calculator uses CAC only; entering CIMT values will produce incorrect results.
