Alzheimers Life Expectancy Calculator

Estimate Alzheimer disease stage duration and life expectancy using the Global Deterioration Scale.

O M T

Alzheimer Disease Life Expectancy by Stage

This calculator uses the Global Deterioration Scale (GDS) to estimate approximate stage duration and life expectancy after diagnosis. These are population-level estimates — individual outcomes depend on age, comorbidities, and care quality. See also the Adjusted Age Calculator for related geriatric assessments.

The Seven GDS Stages

Stage 1 shows no cognitive impairment. Stages 2–7 reflect progressively severe decline in memory, language, self-care, and psychomotor function. Duration and life expectancy shorten as stages advance.

How Estimates Are Used

Clinicians and families use these ranges for care planning, not precise prognosis. Early diagnosis, treatment, and supportive care can improve quality of life even when lifespan is shortened.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Alzheimer's always shorten life expectancy?

Yes. Alzheimer's is progressive and generally reduces lifespan, though the degree varies widely by stage at diagnosis and overall health.

What is stage 1 life expectancy?

Stage 1 (no cognitive impairment) has no applicable duration or life expectancy estimate because symptoms are not yet clinically apparent.

What is life expectancy at stage 6?

At stage 6 (severe cognitive decline), estimated life expectancy is about four years or less.

How is Alzheimer's disease diagnosed?

Diagnosis requires clinical evaluation, cognitive testing, and sometimes brain imaging or biomarkers — there is no single definitive test.

Can early treatment extend life?

Early diagnosis and appropriate care can improve function and may modestly affect survival, but individual results vary considerably.
