Aluminum Weight Calculator

The Aluminum Weight Calculator estimates metal mass from alloy density, shape, and dimensions. Pick a common aluminum grade or enter a custom density, then choose plate, rod, tube, sphere, or hex bar geometry. Results update instantly in kilograms or pounds.

Weight formula

Aluminum weight follows the standard mass equation:

$$\text{Weight} = \text{Volume} \times \text{Density} \times \text{Quantity}$$

For a rectangular plate, volume is length times width times thickness. A solid rod uses $\pi r^2 L$, and a tube subtracts the inner cylinder from the outer cylinder. Density is in kg/m³; typical 6063 aluminum is about 2,700 kg/m³.

Common aluminum alloys

Alloy choice changes density slightly. Series 6063 and 6061 are widely used in extrusions and window frames. Series 7075 is denser and common in aerospace parts. Melted or cast aluminum can be closer to 2,600 kg/m³.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the density of aluminum?

Pure and common wrought aluminum alloys are typically around 2,700 kg/m³ (168 lb/ft³). Alloy 7075 is closer to 2,800 kg/m³, while some 5xxx alloys are slightly lower.

How do I calculate aluminum sheet weight?

Multiply length, width, and thickness to get volume, then multiply by density. Example: a 4 ft × 8 ft × 1/4 in plate has volume 0.667 ft³; at 168.55 lb/ft³ the weight is about 112 lb.

Does alloy type matter much for weight?

Yes, but the difference is usually small (roughly 2% to 4% between common alloys). For precise shipping or structural estimates, select the exact grade.

How is tube weight different from solid rod weight?

Tube volume uses the annular cross-section: outer circle area minus inner circle area, times length. A hollow tube weighs less than a solid rod with the same outer diameter.
