Understanding Wheel Offset and Backspacing

When upgrading or changing the wheels on a vehicle, choosing the correct wheel dimensions is crucial to prevent suspension rubbing, fender interference, and to ensure correct handling. Two of the most important measurements are width and offset.

  • Wheel Width: The distance between the inner tire bead seats, measured in inches.
  • Wheel Offset (ET): The distance from the hub-mounting surface of the wheel to the true centerline of the wheel, measured in millimeters. Offset can be positive, negative, or zero.

Positive, Negative, and Zero Offset

The offset value determines how deep the wheel sits in the wheel well:

  • Positive Offset: The hub-mounting surface is closer to the street side (outer face) of the wheel. This pulls the wheel inward towards the suspension. Most modern front-wheel drive cars use positive offset.
  • Zero Offset: The hub-mounting surface is exactly aligned with the centerline of the wheel.
  • Negative Offset: The hub-mounting surface is closer to the suspension side (back face) of the wheel. This pushes the wheel outward towards the fender, giving a deep-dish look. Common on lifted trucks and classic RWD cars.

Calculating Fitment Changes

When comparing a new wheel to your current setup, two changes must be calculated:

1. Inner Clearance Shift

This indicates how much closer the new wheel will sit to the suspension components (struts, sway bars, etc.).

2. Outer Position Shift (Poke)

This indicates how much further the new wheel will stick out toward the outer fender line.

If the offset is too high (too positive), the wheel sits too far inward and can rub against struts, calipers, or steering knuckles. If the offset is too low (too negative), the wheel sticks out too far and can rub the fender lip or increase bearing wear.
