Understanding Wheel Horsepower vs Engine Horsepower

When discussing a vehicle's performance, the term horsepower is frequently used. However, there is a key difference between the power produced by the engine and the power that actually reaches the ground to propel the vehicle forward.

  • Engine/Brake Horsepower (BHP): This is the raw power generated at the engine's crankshaft before any losses from the transmission or other accessories are factored in.
  • Wheel Horsepower (WHP): This is the actual power measured at the drive wheels using a chassis dynamometer. It represents the actual work the car can perform on the road.

Why is Wheel Horsepower Lower than Engine Horsepower?

As power travels from the engine crankshaft to the drive wheels, it must pass through various drivetrain components. Each component introduces friction, inertia, and mechanical drag, causing power loss. This phenomenon is known as drivetrain loss.

The main sources of drivetrain loss include:

  • The transmission (manual or automatic gear friction and fluid resistance)
  • The driveshaft and universal joints
  • The differential gears
  • Wheel bearings and axle shafts
  • Tire rolling resistance and slippage on the dynamometer

Drivetrain Loss Estimates by Layout

Different drivetrain configurations experience different amounts of power loss:

  • Front-Wheel Drive (FWD): FWD layouts are highly efficient because the engine, transmission, and differential are packaged tightly together. Drivetrain loss is typically around 15%.
  • Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD): RWD layouts have a longer path, requiring a driveshaft to transfer power to the rear differential. Drivetrain loss is typically around 18%.
  • All-Wheel Drive (AWD): AWD and 4WD systems use transfer cases, front/rear differentials, and multiple driveshafts, creating the most drag. Drivetrain loss is typically around 25%.
