How Much Fish Oil Should You Take?

Fish oil supplements provide omega-3 fatty acids, mainly EPA and DHA, which support heart, brain, and inflammatory health. Daily needs depend on body weight and clinical goal. This human omega-3 calculator estimates EPA+DHA in milligrams and converts that to capsules when you enter label concentration. For cholesterol-related tools, see the Cholesterol Ratio Calculator.

Health Goals and Typical Doses

General wellness often targets at least 250 mg EPA+DHA daily, or about 15–20 mg per kilogram of body weight. Heart-health guidance commonly uses around 1,000 mg EPA+DHA. High triglyceride therapy under medical supervision may require 2,000–4,000 mg daily. During pregnancy, many guidelines suggest roughly 200–300 mg EPA+DHA.

Capsule Math

If a 1,000 mg fish oil capsule contains 30% EPA+DHA, each capsule delivers about 300 mg. Divide your daily EPA+DHA target by the mg per capsule to estimate how many softgels to take. Always read your product label because concentrations vary widely.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between fish oil and EPA+DHA?

Fish oil is the whole supplement weight. EPA and DHA are the active omega-3 fats. A 1,000 mg capsule with 30% EPA+DHA contains 300 mg of those combined fats, not 1,000 mg.

Is this calculator for pets?

No. This tool is for adult human dosing. Pet omega-3 needs differ by species and weight; use a veterinary calculator instead.

Can I take high doses without a doctor?

Moderate doses for general health are widely used, but triglyceride-lowering doses of 2,000 mg or more should only be taken under medical supervision because of bleeding risk and drug interactions.

Why does general health use mg/kg?

Larger bodies may benefit from slightly higher baseline omega-3 intake. Many references suggest 15–20 mg EPA+DHA per kg, with a 250 mg daily floor for general wellness.

Should I take fish oil with food?

Taking fish oil with a meal that contains fat improves absorption and may reduce fishy burps. Split large daily doses into two servings if tolerated better.

Are plant omega-3s the same as fish oil?

Flax and chia provide ALA, which the body converts only inefficiently to EPA and DHA. Fish oil and algae oil supply EPA and DHA directly.
