Find what US K-12 grade you were in for any birth year and calendar year using the September cutoff rule.

O M T

US K-12 Grade by Year

This calculator answers “what grade was I in?” for any calendar year using the common US rule that kindergarten starts the fall after you turn five, with a September cutoff.

Grade Formula

$$\text{grade} = \text{calendar year} - (\text{birth year} + 5)$$

Example: born in 2010, checking 2020 gives \(2020 - 2015 = 5\), so 5th grade. Negative results mean school had not started yet; values above 12 mean already graduated.

Grade Labels

Grade 0 is Kindergarten, grades 1–12 map to elementary through high school, and the tool labels “not started” or “graduated” when the year falls outside K–12.
