How Much Halloween Candy to Buy

Running out of candy on Halloween night is every host's nightmare. Estimate demand from expected visitors, pieces per child, and a safety buffer so you do not turn away trick-or-treaters.

Candy Quantity Formula

$$\text{candy needed} = \text{trick-or-treaters} \times \text{pieces per child} \times \left(1 + \frac{\text{buffer \%}}{100}\right)$$ $$\text{bags needed} = \left\lceil \frac{\text{candy needed}}{\text{pieces per bag}} \right\rceil$$

Example: 75 children, 3 pieces each, and a 10% buffer requires 248 pieces. At 50 pieces per bag, buy 5 bags.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many trick-or-treaters should I expect?

Check past years, neighborhood size, and local event schedules. Suburban streets with many decorated houses may see 50–150 visitors in a few hours.

How many pieces of candy per child is typical?

Two to three fun-size pieces per child is common. Generous hosts may give four or five.

Why add a buffer?

A 10–20% buffer covers last-minute visitors, popular-house surges, and candy that breaks or spills while handing out.

How do I estimate bags?

Divide total pieces needed by the count on the package label. Round up so you are not short on the last handful.

What if turnout is lower than expected?

Store sealed candy for next year or donate unopened packages to food banks that accept Halloween candy.
