What Is a 5K Pace Calculator?

A 5K pace calculator converts between your finish time and your running pace for the 5 kilometre distance. Enter a finish time and the tool shows pace per kilometre, pace per mile, and both metric and imperial speed. Enter a pace instead and it estimates your 5K finish time. For other race distances, use the Pace Calculator, the Half Marathon Pace Calculator, or the Marathon Pace Calculator.

How the Calculation Works

A 5K is exactly 5 kilometres, which equals 3.10686 miles because 1 mile is 1.609344 km. Pace is total time divided by distance:

$$\text{Pace} = \frac{\text{Finish Time}}{\text{Distance}}$$

Working the other way, a target pace gives a finish time:

$$\text{Finish Time} = \text{Pace} \times \text{Distance}$$

Speed is distance divided by time, reported in km/h and mph. Converting between pace per km and pace per mile uses the factor 1 mile = 1.609344 km.

Worked Example

A 25:00 5K is 1500 seconds. Pace per kilometre is 1500 / 5 = 300 seconds, or 5:00 per km. Pace per mile is 1500 / 3.10686 = 482.8 seconds, or 8:03 per mile. Speed is 5 / 1500 x 3600 = 12.0 km/h, which is about 7.5 mph. Running that pace for a 10K would take 50:00, a useful benchmark when moving up in distance.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good 5K time?

Recreational runners often finish between 25 and 35 minutes, which is roughly 5:00 to 7:00 per km. Times under 20 minutes are competitive for most age groups, while elite runners go well under 15 minutes.

How do I convert my 5K pace to minutes per mile?

Divide your pace per kilometre by 1.609344, or multiply pace per mile by 1.609344 to get pace per km. A 5:00 per km pace is 5.00 x 1.609344 = 8:03 per mile.

What is the difference between pace and speed?

Pace is the time to cover one unit of distance, such as minutes per km. Speed is the distance covered per unit of time, such as km/h. A lower pace means a higher speed.

Can I use this calculator to find my finish time from a pace?

Yes. Switch to the pace-to-time mode, enter your pace in minutes and seconds, choose per km or per mile, and the tool returns the 5K finish time along with the equivalent pace in the other unit.

How do I improve my 5K pace?

Combine easy aerobic running, weekly interval sessions, and tempo runs near your threshold pace. Increasing weekly mileage gradually and including strides also helps running economy.
