How Test Grades Are Calculated

A basic test grade is the percentage of questions answered correctly. When wrong answers carry a penalty, each incorrect response deducts fractional credit before the percentage is computed.

Test Grade Formula

$$\text{grade \%} = \frac{\text{correct} - (\text{wrong} \times \text{penalty})}{\text{total questions}} \times 100$$

Example: on a 20-question test with 16 correct and 4 wrong, the simple score is 80%. With a 0.25-point penalty per wrong answer, the adjusted score is 75%.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a wrong answer penalty?

Some tests subtract partial credit for incorrect answers. A penalty of 0.25 means each wrong answer costs one quarter of a point before the percentage is calculated.

How are letter grades assigned?

This tool uses a common US scale: A (90–100), B (80–89), C (70–79), D (60–69), and F (below 60). Schools may use different cutoffs.

What if I leave questions blank?

Blank answers are treated as wrong when total questions is fixed. Enter only the number of questions you attempted if your instructor scores blanks differently.

Can I use this for multiple-choice exams with guessing penalties?

Yes. Set the penalty to match your exam rules, such as subtracting 0.33 for each wrong answer on a four-option test.

What is the difference between simple and adjusted percentage?

Simple percentage ignores penalties and uses correct divided by total. Adjusted percentage applies the wrong-answer penalty first.
