What is a Stair Carpet Calculator?

A stair carpet calculator helps you determine the exact amount of carpet needed to cover a flight of stairs. By entering the dimensions of your steps, risers, treads, landings, and any nosing overhangs, this tool calculates the precise carpet length, width, and total area required, along with an estimated cost based on your chosen carpet price per square meter.

Whether you are installing a full carpet or a stair runner, accurate measurements are essential to avoid waste and ensure a professional finish. This calculator accounts for both the vertical riser sections and the horizontal tread sections of each step, as well as any landing areas at the top or bottom of the staircase.

How to Measure Your Stairs for Carpet

To get accurate results, you will need to measure several dimensions of your staircase:

  • Number of steps - Count the total number of risers (vertical sections) in your flight of stairs.
  • Riser rise - The vertical height from the top of one tread to the top of the next tread.
  • Effective tread run - The horizontal depth of each step, from the riser to the nosing edge.
  • Landing depth - If your staircase has a landing at the top or bottom, measure its depth along the direction of travel.
  • Stair width - The width of the staircase from one side to the other.

If your stairs have nosing overhangs (the portion of the tread that extends beyond the riser), you can enable the nosing option and specify the shape (rounded, rectangular, or triangular), overhang distance, and thickness for more precise calculations.

How the Carpet Calculation Works

The calculator uses the following approach to determine the carpet dimensions:

First, for each step, the carpet must cover the riser and the nosing overhang. The length per step section is calculated as:

$V = R + P$ (for stairs without nosing, $V = R$)

Where $R$ is the riser rise and $P$ is the exposed nosing perimeter. For a rounded (bullnose) nosing, the perimeter is:

$P = 2 \times (o - \frac{t}{2}) + \frac{\pi \times t}{2}$

For a rectangular nosing: $P = 2 \times o + t$

For a triangular nosing: $P = o + \sqrt{o^2 + t^2}$

Where $o$ is the nosing overhang and $t$ is the nosing thickness.

The total carpet length for the flight is then:

$L = n \times V + (n - 1) \times T + D + A$

Where $n$ is the number of steps, $T$ is the effective tread run, $D$ is the landing depth, and $A$ is the length allowance.

The carpet width is simply the stair width plus any width allowance. The total carpet area is then:

$Area = Length \times Width$

When to Use This Calculator

This stair carpet calculator is useful for:

  • Planning a DIY stair carpet installation project
  • Estimating material costs before purchasing carpet
  • Comparing different carpet options and budgets
  • Calculating carpet for both full coverage and stair runner installations
  • Determining padding and underlayment requirements

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate carpet for a stair runner?

For a stair runner, measure the riser rise and tread run of each step. The carpet length is calculated as: length = (riser rise x number of steps) + (tread run x (number of steps - 1)). Add extra length for any landings and allowances. The width should be less than your stair width to leave exposed flooring on each side.

Where should I start installing stair carpet?

You can start from either the bottom or top of the stairs. For beginners, starting from the bottom is easier as you can push and tuck the carpet into place without stepping on the loose end. For stairs with overhanging nosings, installing from the bottom up makes it easier to tuck the carpet under the nosing.

How much does it cost to carpet stairs?

The cost to carpet stairs depends on the carpet quality, stair design, and labor. A standard 12-step straight staircase with 100 cm width may cost between $3.50 to $120 per step for materials alone, depending on the carpet grade. Including underlayment and installation, the total cost typically ranges from $200 to $800 for a standard flight of stairs.

What is the difference between thinset and mortar for tile installation?

Thinset is a type of mortar specifically designed for tile installation. It contains cement, fine sand, and additives that provide strong adhesion and flexibility. While traditional mortar is used for brick and block construction, thinset is optimized for bonding tiles to walls, floors, and countertops with a thin application layer.

Can I use this calculator for spiral stairs?

This calculator is designed for straight flights of stairs. For spiral stairs, the measurements are more complex due to the curved treads. We recommend consulting a professional or using our Spiral Staircase Calculator for curved staircases.
