Spring Rate Calculator
Calculate spring rate (stiffness) from force and displacement, or solve for force and compression.
What Is Spring Rate?
Spring rate (stiffness) is the ratio of force to displacement. It tells you how many newtons are required per meter of compression or extension. Automotive and suspension engineers often quote spring rate in N/m or lb/in.
Spring Rate Formula
$$k = \frac{F}{x}$$Rearrange to solve for force \(F = kx\) or displacement \(x = F/k\). All three variables must use consistent SI units: newtons and meters give N/m.
Example: 100 N over 0.05 m gives \(k = 2000\,\text{N/m}\).
Measuring Spring Rate
Bench tests apply a known force and measure deflection. For coil springs in vehicles, rate affects ride comfort, body roll, and load capacity. Always measure over the linear portion of the spring curve.

Frequently Asked Questions
What units does spring rate use?
SI spring rate is N/m. Imperial specs often use lb/in. Use the spring rate converter to switch between common units.
Is spring rate the same as spring constant?
Yes. Both refer to k in Hooke's law. Spring rate is common in automotive and suspension contexts.
Why must displacement be greater than zero?
Dividing force by zero displacement is undefined. Measure deflection over a nonzero interval in the linear range.
Do I need to convert millimeters to meters?
Yes for SI calculations. 50 mm = 0.05 m. Enter displacement in meters or convert before calculating.
Can I solve for force instead of rate?
Yes. Select Force as the solve target and enter spring rate and displacement to get F = kx.
