How Sentence Detection Works
The Sentence Counter uses punctuation-based segmentation: text is split on the standard
sentence-ending characters — period (.), exclamation mark (!),
and question mark (?). Trailing fragments without ending punctuation are
still counted as sentences so partial drafts are not undercounted.
Frequently Asked Questions
What counts as a sentence in this tool?
Any group of words ending with ., !, or ?
is counted as one sentence. A trailing fragment without ending punctuation is
also counted as a sentence so unfinished drafts still show realistic numbers.
Does the Sentence Counter handle abbreviations?
The tool relies on punctuation-based detection, so abbreviations like Dr., Mr., and e.g. may be counted as sentence boundaries. If you need exact counts in such text, edit the text or briefly rephrase to avoid the abbreviation.
Is my text uploaded to a server?
No. All counting and analysis runs in your browser. Your text never leaves your device, which makes the tool safe for confidential or unpublished writing.
Why is sentence length important?
Sentence length strongly affects readability. Mixing short and long sentences makes prose flow better. The Sentence Counter shows the longest, shortest, and average sentence length so you can spot monotonous passages quickly.
Can I count sentences in a file?
Yes. Use the upload button on the input area to load a plain-text file. The file content is read in your browser and analyzed instantly.
Does the tool work with non-English text?
Yes. As long as sentences end in ., !, or
?, detection works for most Latin-script languages. Languages
with different sentence terminators may need manual adjustments.
