What Does Screen Size Mean?

Screen size usually refers to the diagonal measurement across the display. A 27-inch monitor means the diagonal is 27 inches, not the width or height alone.

How Width and Height Are Calculated

Given a diagonal and aspect ratio, width and height come from the Pythagorean theorem. If the aspect ratio is width divided by height, then:

$$height = \frac{diagonal}{\sqrt{AR^2 + 1}}$$

$$width = AR \times height$$

Frequently Asked Questions

What is aspect ratio?

Aspect ratio is the proportional relationship between screen width and height. Common values include 16:9, 16:10, and 21:9.

What does a 5.8-inch phone screen mean?

It means the diagonal is 5.8 inches. Actual width and height depend on the phone's aspect ratio, such as 16:9 or 19.5:9.

How do I calculate screen area?

Multiply width by height after converting both to the same unit. This calculator returns area in square inches or square centimeters.

How wide is a 120-inch screen?

At 16:9, a 120-inch diagonal is about 105 inches wide. Ultrawide 21:9 screens of the same diagonal are wider still.

Do curved screens use the same formula?

The visible arc length still maps to width, while curvature rating (such as 1800R) helps estimate base depth and footprint on a desk or wall.
