Pixels to Print Size

Converting pixels to print dimensions requires knowing pixel density (PPI). A 3600×5400 image at 300 PPI prints at 12"×18" without upscaling. Too few pixels for the print size produces a blocky, pixelated result.

Print Size Formulas

$$\text{print width} = \frac{\text{image width (px)}}{\text{PPI}}$$ $$\text{print height} = \frac{\text{image height (px)}}{\text{PPI}}$$

To find required pixels for a target print size, multiply dimensions by PPI:

$$\text{image width (px)} = \text{print width} \times \text{PPI}$$

Example: 3600 px ÷ 300 PPI = 12 inches wide, and 5400 px ÷ 300 PPI = 18 inches tall. Industry standard for photo prints viewed at arm's length is 300 PPI.

Frequently Asked Questions

What PPI should I use for photo prints?

300 PPI is the industry standard for high-quality prints viewed at arm's length. Albums and frames at about 1 meter can use 180 PPI. Large posters viewed from farther away can use 120 PPI or less.

Is PPI the same as DPI?

PPI (pixels per inch) describes digital image resolution. DPI (dots per inch) describes printer ink dots. They are related but not identical. This calculator uses PPI for image dimensions.

How many megapixels do I need for a 4×6 print?

At 300 PPI, a 4×6 print needs 1200×1800 pixels, or about 2.2 megapixels. Shooting at higher resolution gives more cropping flexibility.

Can I print larger than the calculated size?

Yes, but upscaling lowers effective PPI and reduces sharpness. Stay at or below the maximum print size for the PPI you need.

How do I convert between inches and centimeters?

Multiply inches by 2.54 to get centimeters. This calculator supports both units for print dimensions.
