What Is Image Aspect Ratio?

Aspect ratio describes the proportional relationship between image width and height. A 1920 by 1080 pixel image has ratio 16:9 because both dimensions share a greatest common divisor of 120.

How to Simplify Width and Height

Divide width and height by their greatest common divisor (GCD) to get the simplest whole-number ratio. For 1920 and 1080, GCD is 120, giving 16:9. The decimal form is width divided by height, about 1.7778 for widescreen video.

Common Aspect Ratios

Photography and video use recurring ratios: 4:3 for classic displays, 3:2 for 35mm stills, 16:9 for HD video, and 21:9 for ultrawide cinema. The calculator detects the nearest standard ratio when dimensions are close.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the aspect ratio of 1920x1080?

1920:1080 simplifies to 16:9, the standard HD widescreen ratio. The decimal value is 1.7778.

How do I find the simplified ratio?

Compute the GCD of width and height, then divide both dimensions by that number. The result is the smallest integer ratio.

Why might my ratio not match a standard name?

Cropped, padded, or custom resolutions may not exactly match 16:9 or 4:3. The tool still shows the exact simplified ratio and nearest common match when close.

Does aspect ratio depend on units?

No. Pixels, inches, or centimeters cancel out as long as both dimensions use the same unit. Only the proportion matters.

What is the difference between landscape and portrait?

Landscape means width is greater than height. Portrait means height is greater. A square image has equal width and height.
