Save Percentage Calculator for Goalkeepers

This Save Percentage Calculator computes goalkeeper save percentage (SV%), total team save percentage, and goals against average (GAA) for soccer, hockey, lacrosse, handball, and other goalkeeper sports. For NHL-focused hockey analysis, see our Goalie Save Percentage Calculator and Goals Against Average Calculator.

Goalkeeper Save Percentage Formula

Save percentage equals saves divided by shots on target against the goalkeeper. Multiply by 100 to express the result as a percentage. Only count saves made by the goalkeeper, not blocked shots or saves by field players.

Total Save Percentage and GAA

Total save percentage includes saves by any defender plus the goalkeeper. Goals against average is calculated as (goals allowed divided by minutes played) multiplied by standard regulation time for the sport.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you calculate save percentage?

Divide goalkeeper saves by shots on target against the goalkeeper. For example, 28 saves on 35 shots gives a save percentage of 0.80 or 80%.

What is a good save percentage in hockey?

In the NHL, save percentages above 0.915 (91.5%) are above average, while anything below 0.900 (90%) is below average. Elite goaltenders often exceed 0.920 (92%).

What is the difference between goalkeeper and total save percentage?

Goalkeeper save percentage counts only stops made by the keeper. Total save percentage includes saves by any player and shots taken without the goalkeeper present.

What is goals against average?

GAA measures goals allowed per regulation game length. It is calculated as goals allowed divided by minutes played, multiplied by the sport's regulation minutes (90 for soccer, 60 for hockey, etc.).

Should missed shots count toward save percentage?

No. Only shots on target should be included. Missed shots that never reach the goalkeeper do not count as shots against.
