How to Convert Quantity Units

Quantity units like dozens, scores, and grosses are traditional counting systems used in commerce, packaging, and everyday language. Conversion Examples

To convert scores to dozens, first find the base unit count, then divide by the target unit size:

For example, 25 scores equals 500 units (25 × 20), which equals 41.67 dozen (500 ÷ 12).

Similarly, 3 gross equals 432 units (3 × 144), which equals 21.6 scores (432 ÷ 20).

Historical and Modern Uses

The term "score" famously appears in the Gettysburg Address ("four score and seven years ago"), meaning 87 years (4 × 20 + 7). Gross and great gross are still used in wholesale packaging: a gross of pencils is 144, and a great gross is 1,728 items (a case of a dozen gross).

A baker's dozen (13) comes from medieval English baking law, where bakers added an extra item to avoid penalties for underweight loaves. Today it means getting one extra item beyond the standard dozen.
