O M T

Popcorn for a Movie Night or Party

This popcorn calculator scales kernels and calories for your guest count and portion size. For other snack planning, try the Party Drink Calculator and BBQ Party Calculator.

Portion Sizes

A standard home serving is about 2 cups per person. Theater-style buckets are much larger: small around 9 cups, medium 13 cups, and large 18 cups per guest.

Kernels to Popcorn Yield

Popcorn kernels expand when heated. The tool assumes about 1.5 cups of popped popcorn per tablespoon of kernels, so tablespoons needed equal total cups divided by 1.5.

$$\text{kernels (tbsp)} = \frac{\text{total cups}}{1.5}$$

Calories by Flavor

Calories vary by preparation. Air-popped popcorn is lowest at about 31 calories per cup. Oil, butter, theater-style, and caramel coatings add more per cup.
